Preheat oven to 350°F or temperature per
recipe directions. Assemble Wonder Mold Doll
Cake pan according to directions that come with
it. Prepare the inside of your pan by greasing
the inside of pan with a pastry brush or bunched
up piece of wax paper and Crisco. Spread Crisco
so that all indentations covered. Sprinkle about
2 Tablespoons flour inside pan and shake so
that flour covers all greased surfaces. Turn
pan upside down and tap lightly to remove excess
flour. If any shiny spots remain, touch up with
more Crisco and flour to prevent cake from sticking.
You can also use vegetable oil spray instead
of Crisco and flour. |

Make one 2-layer cake mix according to recipe
directions (we made a vanilla cake from scratch
- easy and much better tasting than from a box).
Pour the cake batter into pan, and if necessary,
spread the batter around with a spatula to fill
all areas of the pan evenly. Bake cake on middle
rack of 350°F oven for 30-40 minutes or
until cake tests done according to recipe directions. |
| 3 |
Remove cake from oven and cool on cake rack
for 10 minutes. Carefully remove cake from pan
and slice off the raised center portion of what
will be the bottom of the cake. This allows
the cake to sit more level. Allow cake to cool
completely before frosting. |
| 4 |
The
shot glass needs to be inserted into the center
of the cake to hold the lava. Place the glass
upside down on top of the cake and, using a
serrated knife, cut around it all the way to
the bottom. Remove the cut out cake with a spoon
and discard (or have a snack!) Place the glass
inside the cake with the rim level to the top
of your volcano. |
| 5 |
Prepare
serving platter that cake will reside on by
placing triangles of waxed paper in a circle
to lie underneath the edges of the cake, forming
a solid border. This will collect any excess
icing and when you¼re done decorating you pull
out the triangles and throw them away. |
| 6 |
Frost
the cake with the chocolate icing (Make sure
you use standard "icing" or "frosting" that
will harden after being exposed to air - this
will protect your cake from absorbing the liquid
lava. If you use a whipped cream or cream cheese
variety it will get soggy). Make it swirly and
messy so it looks like rough terrain. Make sure
you cover the top of the rim of the shot glass
so it disappears from view. |
| 7 |
Take
1/3 cup of vanilla icing and mix it with green
food coloring. Keep adding color, about 2-3
drops at a time, until it takes on a nice, grassy
color. |
| 8 |
Using
the #233 tip on your pastry bag create grass
along the bottom edges and up the sides of your
volcano. You can follow the lines of your chocolate
swirls to make it look even more realistic. |
| 9 |
Take 1/3 coup vanilla icing and mix with red
food coloring to make your decorative lava.
Red is the most difficult color to make so it
may take a while to get it right. Remember to
mix only a couple of drops at a time as it will
ruin the consistency of the icing if you put
in a lot of food coloring all at the same time. |
| 10 |
Using
your #65 tip create lava around the mouth of
the volcano and down the sides where ever you
like. Don¼t worry about being too neat because
lava is messy. |
| 11 |
Cut
the edge of your bag of coconut and add a few
drops of green food coloring. Hold the opening
of the bag closed tight and shake it up so the
food coloring distributes and coats all of the
coconut. Repeat this process until the coconut
has retained a satisfactory shade of green. |
| 12 |
Remove the waxed paper from underneath the cake
and cover your presentation dish with the coconut
grass. |
| 13 |
Take
2-3 of the graham cracker sheets and place in
a ziplock bag. Roll over the graham crackers
with a rolling pin, hit with a hammer, or use
a heavy book to crush. This will be your sandy
path. |
| 14 |
Your
volcano cake is now ready to be presented to
your party guests. It¼s nice to display it for
a while and let everyone have a look since once
you make the erupting lava the cake will have
to be eaten immediately. |
| 15 |
Make
Jell-o according to package directions. Let
cool 15 minutes. Place 1 Tablespoon baking soda
in the shot glass hidden in the cake. |
| 16 |
Separately,
mix 1/2 the Jell-o with 1/2 of the lemon juice
in a small pitcher or measuring cup with a spout
(something that will make it easy to pour into
the shot glass in the cake). |
| 17 |
Gather your guests, get the camera ready, and
pour your red liquid mixture into the center
of the cake. Voila! Instant lava. If your guests
are impressed you can repeat this process over
and over until you run out of ingredients. But
be warned, the more you do the more soggy the
cake will get. |
| 18 |
Cut
the cake and enjoy! The top part might be a
little soggy but it will be nice and sweet from
the Jell-o. |
